NEW WORKSHOP TO DRIVE SWIRE OILFIELD SERVICES UK OPERATIONS

By: Fifth Ring

The world's leading supplier of specialist offshore cargo carrying units, Swire Oilfield Services, has officially opened its new £1.4 million bespoke, Fleet Refurbishment Workshop in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Housing 25 Swire Oilfield Services employees, including four new recruits, the 1,800 square metre facility was constructed to accommodate increasing demands for refurbishment of the UK based and supported rental fleet. The new facility allows Swire’s experienced and skilled employees to repair, weld and paint its extensive UK fleet from a single location. This will lead to the equivalent of 1,000 mini containers being refurbished next year, a 70% increase on that completed in the same period at the previous workshop.

Continued development of the site has enabled increased efficiency in operating the growing container rental fleet. The relocation of the Fleet Refurbishment activity to the new base has also given the company an opportunity to plan the development of a new transportable tank cleaning facility at its other Aberdeen facility. This will be constructed during 2009. The company, which has existing operating bases in Scotland, England, Norway, West Africa, Russia and the USA, is also developing similar workshop facilities in Australia, Nigeria and Angola.

In addition to the investment in this UK facility, Swire Oilfield Services recently announced it’s fifth international acquisition in the past nine months after buying Maritime Products and Services in Australia. This brings the total acquisition investment this year to £35 million, with a further £18 million being spent on improving its fleet across its global locations during the course of this year alone.

Swire Oilfield Services CEO, Tor Helgeland, said: “The significant investment in our new facility proves the UK remains key to our operations. Our Aberdeen sites are vital to the company’s business across the globe and the new workshop will ensure that we maintain the highest level of service to our customer’s worldwide.

“Our ambitious international growth plans have seen us devote significant funds to acquiring companies as far afield as Angola and Australia. However, while these have emerged as key growth areas, it is important to recognise that the North Sea is also experiencing positive sector conditions. This, along with increased client and industry demand, is why we feel channelling money into the new base will be of great benefit to us, our workforce and the local economy.”

Rupert Bray, Swire Oilfield Services Director and General Manager, added: “The new workshop and modern equipment stands not only as a beacon of our commitment to the region but also as a clear sign of our major growth plans. Centralising our container maintenance and repair operations has enhanced our competitive edge by increasing our workload capacity and giving greater efficiency to our clients.

“We pride ourselves on delivering the highest level of products and services worldwide. Our training and development programmes ensure that staff from all our global locations are fully equipped to deal with varying client demands. As such, the new facility will be the main refurbishment facility for our local operations while also acting as a support base for overseas projects.”
